Jesus Olivas Quintana Pitcher with Birds
Jesus Olivas Quintana. Pitcher with Birds. Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico. Colorful birds and red ponciettas. Weight: 4.2 lbs., height: 19 in., width: 9.5 in.
Jesus Olivas is the older brother of Martin and Eduardo Olivas. He was inspired to make pottery by Eduardo Lalo Quintana Rodriguez his uncle, and he's now known for his white or red clay jars and vases. Jesus likes to begin his designs by painting red and/or black abstract drawings onto the background so they interlock with his lightly carved birds, lizards or fish. Then he likes to add further decoration in the form of Greek and geometric designs until the pot's surface is fully covered (the Porvenir style).
